La Liga champions Real Madrid are ready to move for Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso, according to Spanish outlet Don Balon.
Impressive stint
Former Bolton and Sunderland left-back Alonso has been an absolute revelation since his arrival at Chelsea from Fiorentina last summer, proving a crucial presence up and down the left flank for the Blues during their title-winning campaign last season. He has added a further 6 goals and 1 assist during the current campaign to his haul of 6 goals and 3 assists in the Premier League last season, having appeared in all 22 of the Blues’ league fixtures to this point.
Doubts remain
However, despite his impressive feats in attacking areas, many Chelsea fans still question the defensive credentials of Alonso, with the fact that the London giants have long been linked with a move for Juventus star Alex Sandro adding weight to the possibility that Antonio Conte is also not prepared to move forward with the Spaniard as his first-choice left-sided defender.
Bernabeu bound?
And, as per a surprise report stemming from Don Balon this evening, one club who may look to take advantage of Alonso’s uncertain status in London are European champions Real Madrid. Los Blancos are said to have been alarmed by the displays of first-choice left-back Marcelo this season, with Marca revealing last night that a staggering 40% of the goals conceded by Real in La Liga this season have come down the Brazilian’s side of the pitch.
As such, the board at the Bernabeu have reportedly begun their search for left-sided defensive additions, with Theo Hernandez not yet trusted to take over the role full-time due to his tender years.
And Alonso, who actually came up through the youth ranks at Real, has been added to a list of targets by Real, with Diario Gol suggesting that Los Merengues could look to split playing time between the 27-year-old and Theo.
