Arsenal and Chelsea go head to head over Bayer Leverkusen star

According to reports in the English media this afternoon, Arsenal have moved ahead of both Chelsea and Manchester United in the race for Bayer Leverkusen starlet Leon Bailey.

Blistering youngster

Bailey, a 20-year-old Jamaican winger, only made the move to the BayArena in January of this year for a fee of 20 million Euro, following links with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and more.

The pacy starlet caught the eye with his performances in the Europa League for Belgian outfit Genk last season, and has racked up 8 goals and 4 assists in 16 domestic appearances to this point in his debut campaign with Leverkusen (11 starts).

In-demand

However, despite being just 4 months into his first season in the Bundesliga, Bailey has already been linked with a departure from the BayArena, with Spanish giants Barcelona the side most persistently linked with a bid for his services.

The Blaugrana are known to be on the lookout for reinforcements in attacking positions, with Arda Turan and Paco Alcacer linked with Camp Nou departures, and the likes of Gerard Deulofeu and Denis Suarez struggling to hold down consistent starting spots for the La Liga table-toppers.

PL battle

Several reports last week claimed that Premier League outfit Chelsea had also emerged as contenders for Bailey’s signature, with the Daily Mail even going as far as to suggest that the Blues had seen a 25 million Euro offer rejected by Leverkusen.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal have also reportedly joined the escalating race for the Jamaican’s signature over recent days, with several outlets in England today claiming that the latter of these sides have jumped to the front of the queue for the youngster.

The Gunners are preparing for life without soon-to-be out of contract attacker Alexis Sanchez, with the board in North London viewing Bailey as a viable option to replace the Chilean star.
